Where are we finding it now? The justice system. In Ontario, Canada, police have been sending out thousands of SMS messages to the public who would have been within a radius of Nepean, Ontario, where a murder occurred last year. The hope is that new evidence or eye witnesses may be uncovered.
When asked to elaborate on the technique, OPP detective superintendent Dave Traux said: “We believe this new investigative technique will reach witnesses.” The text messages direct recipients to a website where they can answer questions. Around 7,500 phones will be sent messages to that effect. That’s 7,500 potential opportunities for new evidence or eyewitnesses to emerge.
And as for the ethics of this method? The OPP has stated that it used a court order to obtain the numbers of all the active phones known to have been used last year around Nepean, Ontario.
